When I was a lad, my father, a captain of a Nantucket whaler, brought me to sea to learn the family business, for he had not the foresight to see the end of whaling coming on us so fast as it did. Regardless, this was my first real taste of the sea, a mysterious world that would hold my love and curiosity for all my days.
The ship was small, for a whaler, and didn’t stay out to sea for more than a year in the entire time she served. Unusually, even for a good American vessel, she had a fully white crew, and was the pride of her owners’ fleet.
